Newsletter: Online Edition 4/23/12

Reading:  We have been working on a reading strategy called “Word Detectives.”  So far we’ve learned three steps in the strategy.  Step 1:  When we come to a word that we don’t know the meaning of, we should STOP.  Step 2:  Look for clues in the illustrations, captions, and other text features to help us know the meaning of the word.  Step 3:  Read on or reread the text to help us find clues in the text.  We are doing great at stopping when we come to a word we don’t understand… and we’re working hard to follow the other two steps now, too!

Math:  Last week we took a test on 3-D shapes.  We should know what they are and how to compare them now.  This week we’re starting out with measuring in both centimeters and meters and inches, feet and yards.  Then we’ll move on to fractions and multiplication towards the end of this week.

Spelling:  This week and last we are working on prefixes.  Last week we focused on “un” words.  This week we’re focusing on “re” words.  Next week we’ll move on to suffixes.

Writing:  We just finished a BIG unit on poetry!  The kids have all written numerous poems and most have turned a poem into Mrs. Kennedy’s poetry contest.  Now we’re moving on to descriptive writing, which we’re kicking off with a special guest on Tuesday!

Science:  We started our Life Cycles unit today!  We are very excited to watch our caterpillars grow!

If you have not returned a permission slip for your child to walk to Pringle Park for our last field trip, please sign the attached form and send it in asap.  Also mark if they will need a school lunch packed for them or if they’ll bring one from home.
If your child has a summer birthday, you will find a paper about their celebration in Monday folders today.
