Weekly Wrap-Up: November 11, 2011

Reading:  We are learning about nonfiction books. Did you know that nonfiction books are full of text features such as headings, bold print words, labels, photographs, and captions? These text features help us understand what we are reading and sometimes even give us extra information about the topic. We will also be starting Raz-Kids during our station time soon! Thanks to the PTO for donating the funds to get enough subscriptions for all of 2nd grade!
Math:  After a really long unit on story problems, we’ve started a mini-unit on shapes & perimeter today. Our next unit is about place value.

Spelling:  We are working on contractions! We learned that a contraction is two words that were squished together to make a shorter word. And in place of the missing letters, we put an apostrophe.

Writing: We are writing opinion pieces. We now understand that our opinion may not be the same as someone else, so we need to give our reasons why we think the way we do.

Science/Social Studies: We started a new science unit last week– Sun, Moon, and Stars. We are having a blast learning about the phases of the moon, how the moon & earth rotate around the sun, and more!

Citizens of the Month…
We have had the Citizen of the Month celebration for September and October . Congratulations to Gustavo G. and Gisel A. for being our first two Citizens of the Month!

We’ve been very lucky with our weather lately! But remember that Indiana weather can change quickly, even in the middle of the day. Be sure your child comes to school prepared for colder weather– pack a hat & gloves in their backpack each day, just in case. And be sure to send them to school with a jacket or coat, as well!
